Acid rain, in its simplest form, refers to precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, or fog) that has a pH level below normal, typically lower than 5.6. This acidity is caused by the release of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere, primarily from burning fossil fuels.

The process begins when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides interact with water vapor in the air, forming sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3). These acids then combine with rainwater, turning it acidic. The mixture falls back to Earth as acid rain, affecting soil, water bodies, and even buildings.

Acid rain has significant ecological and environmental consequences. It can leach essential nutrients from soil, harming plant life, and disrupting ecosystems. Acid rain also weakens the protective shells of aquatic organisms, threatening aquatic life. In forests, acid rain can damage trees by corroding their bark and leaves, impacting timber quality and forest health.

Due to the global nature of this issue, international efforts have been made to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, such as through the Clean Air Act in the United States and the European Unions Emissions Trading System. These regulations aim to mitigate the effects of acid rain and promote cleaner energy alternatives.

Understanding the English term "acid rain" is crucial for discussing climate change and environmental conservation efforts in an international context. Educating the public about the science behind it and advocating for sustainable practices can help combat this environmental challenge.
